Although cover crops are growing in popularity, they are still only used on about\u00a0<\/span>6 percent of cropland<\/span>, meaning there is plenty of opportunity for growth. The good news is that for the second year running, the White House\u00a0<\/span>requested funding<\/span> in its annual\u00a0<\/span>budget<\/span> for a program that gives farmers a $5-per-acre \u201cgood driver discount\u201d on their crop insurance if they plant cover crops. This commonsense proposal is based on popular programs that are currently in place in\u00a0<\/span>Illinois<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Indiana<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Iowa<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>Wisconsin<\/span>, as well as a\u00a0<\/span>temporary program<\/span> that the U.S. Department of Agriculture ran from 2022\u20132023 before funding ran out. And there is legislation called the\u00a0<\/span>COVER Act<\/span> already waiting in Congress that could make this program a reality in the next Farm Bill.
